The mighty Rudra is a strong and powerful god in the Rigveda. He is generally regarded as a personification of nature, but his weapons are maleficent, unlike that of Indra, which are directed only against the enemies of his worshipers. Rudra appears therefore to have originally represented not nature, but rather its baleful side in the destructive agency of lightning, thunder-storm, floods, etc.
With firm limbs, multiform, the strong, the tawny adorns himself with bright gold decorations. The strength of Godhead never departs from Rudra, him who is sovereign of this world, the mighty. – Rigveda 2.33.9
He is usually said to be armed with a bow and arrows. He is the father of Maruts. And He is said to have generated them from the shining udder of Prsni.

Rudra is fierce and destructive like a terrible beast. He is the ruddy boar of heaven. And He is exalted, strong, strongest of the strong, unassailable, unsurpassed in might, rapid and swift. Malevolence is frequently attributed to Rudra in the Rigveda; for the hymns addressed to him chiefly express fear of his terrible shafts and deprecation of his wrath. The gods representing the powers of nature, such as fire, sun, thunderstorm, etc., appear in the Vedas as almost exclusively beneficent beings, who bestow prosperity. The only deity in whom injurious features are at all prominent is Rudra. He is implored not to slay or injure, in his anger. His worshippers pray that they may be unharmed and obtain his favour.
O Rudra, harm not either great or small of us, harm not the growing boy, harm not the full-grown man. Slay not a sire among us, slay no mother here, and to our own dear bodies, Rudra, do not harm. – Rigveda 1.114.7
Harm us not, Rudra, in our seed and progeny, harm us not in the living, nor in cows or steeds. Slay not our heroes in the fury of thy wrath. Bringing oblations evermore we call to thee. – Rigveda 1.114.8
Rudra is, however, not purely maleficent like a demon. He is also begged in the Rigveda to avert anger or the evil that comes from the gods. He is besought not only to preserve from calamity but to bestow blessings, and produce welfare for man and beast.

The etymology of the word rudra is somewhat uncertain as regards the meaning. It is generally derived from the root rud, to cry, and interpreted as the Howler. However, it is also connected with a root rud having the conjectural meaning of ‘to shine’ or ‘to be ruddy’; hence, Rudra could also mean the ‘bright one’ or the ‘red one’.Hindus worship Rudra for health and prosperity.
