Goddess Andal(Goda Devi) was a 10th century Tamil poet who is revered as a saint in the southern parts of India. Infact, she is considered as one of the twelve Alvars (saints) and the only woman Alvar (saint) of Vaishnavism (a cult devoted to Lord Vishnu). She is also believed to be an incarnation of Sri Bhumi Devi, the Divine Consort of Sriman Narayana (a manifestation of Lord Vishnu). Andal Thiruppavai, the compilation of devotional poems sung by her, is still recited by devotees during the month of Margazhi.
Andal composed two poetic works in her lifetime, both in Tamil. Even though she compiled the poems in her teenage years, they display a high level of literary and religious maturity. Her first work is known as Andal Thiruppavai. It is compilation of thirty verses, in which she imagines herself to be a cowherd girl who longs to serve Lord Krishna. The second compilation is known as Nacciyar Tirumoli, consisting of 143 verses. Through this poem, she disclosed her passionate yearning for Lord Vishnu.
Thiruppavai is said to be Vedam Anaithukkum Vithagum, meaning, it is the seed of the vedam. The entire essence of the vedas hidden in Thiruppavai can be revealed only under the guidance of an acharya or a guru, who is well versed in vedic scriptures.

తమిళనాడులోని శ్రీవిల్లిపుత్తూరులో విష్ణుచిత్తుడనే భక్తుడు ఉండేవాడు. ఈ విల్లిపుత్తూరులోనే శ్రీకృష్ణుడు, మర్రి ఆకు మీద తేలియాడుతూ లోకాన్ని రక్షించాడని నమ్మకం. అందుకే ఇక్కడి ఆలయంలోని ప్రధాన దైవం ఆ చిన్నికృష్ణుడే. విష్ణుచిత్తుడు నిత్యం ఆ కృష్ణునికి పుష్పమాలలని అర్పిస్తూ ఉండేవాడు. విష్ణుచిత్తుడి అసలు పేరు భట్టనాథుడు. నిరంతరం ఆయన చిత్తం విష్ణుమూర్తి మీదే ఉండేది కాబట్టి ఆ బిరుదు దక్కింది. ఆయనను విష్ణుభక్తులైన ఆళ్వారులలో ఒకరిగా ఎంచి, ఆయనకు పెరియాళ్వారు అంటే – పెద్ద ఆళ్వారు అన్న గౌరవాన్ని కూడా అందించారు. అలాంటి పెరియాళ్వారు ఒకసారి తులసి మొక్కల కోసం పాదులు తీస్తుండగా ఒక పాప కనిపించింది. ఆమెను సాక్షాత్తూ భగవంతుని ప్రసాదంగా భావించి ఆమెను పెంచుకోసాగాడు విష్ణుచిత్తుడు. ఆమెకు ‘కోదై’ అంటే – పూలమాల అన్నపేరుతో గారాబంగా పెంచసాగాడు విష్ణుచిత్తుడు. ఆ పేరే క్రమంగా గోదాగా మారింది.
గోదాదేవి చిన్ననాటి నుంచి కృష్ణుడి లీలలను ఆడుతూపాడుతూ పెరిగిందే. యుక్తవయసు వచ్చేసరికి ఆ భక్తి కాస్తా ప్రేమగా మారిపోయింది. కళ్లుమూసినా, తెరిచినా ఆ నల్లనివాడే కనిపించసాగాడు. తన చుట్టూ ఉన్న స్నేహితురాళ్లంతా ఒకప్పటి గోపికలనీ, తానుండే విల్లిపుత్తూరు ఒకనాటి గోకులమని భావించసాగింది. అంతేకాదు! తన తండ్రి విష్ణుచిత్తుడు రోజూ భగవంతుని కోసం రూపొందించే మాలలను ముందు తనే ధరించి, తనలో ఆ కృష్ణుని చూసుకుని మురిసిపోయేది. ఈ దృశ్యం ఒకరోజు విష్ణుచిత్తుని కంట పడనే పడింది. తన కూతురు చేసిన పని వల్ల ఇన్నాళ్లూ ఆ దేవదేవుని పట్ల అపచారం జరిగిందని బాధపడ్డాడు. కానీ ఆ రోజు కృష్ణుడు అతనికి కలలో కనిపించి, గోదాదేవి సాక్షాత్తూ భూదేవి అవతారమేననీ, ఆమె వేసుకున్న మాలలను ధరించిడం వల్ల తనకు అపచారం కాదు కదా, ఆనందం కలుగుతుందనీ తెలియచేశాడు.
ఇలాంటి సంఘటనలన్నీ గోదా మనసులో కృష్ణప్రేమని మరింతగా పెంచాయి. తనకు పెళ్లంటూ జరిగితే ఆయనతోనే జరగాలని అనుకుంది. అందుకోసం ఒకప్పుడు గోపికలు చేసిన కాత్యాయని వ్రతాన్ని మొదలుపెట్టింది. ఈ వ్రతం చేయాలంటే ఆహారానికీ, అలంకారానికీ సంబంధించిన చాలా కఠినమైన నియమాలని పాటించాల్సి ఉంటుంది. అలా గోదాదేవి తాను వ్రతాన్ని పాటించడమే కాకుండా తన చెలికత్తెలని కూడా ప్రోత్సహించింది. తన స్నేహితురాళ్లను మేలుకొలిపేందుకు, వారికి వ్రత విధానాలను తెలియచేసేందుకు, తనలో కృష్ణభక్తిని వెల్లడించేందుకు 30 పాశురాలను పాడింది గోదా. అవే ధనుర్మాసంలో ప్రతి వైష్ణవభక్తుని ఇంట్లోనూ వినిపించే తిరుప్పావై!
ఇలా సాగుతున్న గోదాదేవి ప్రేమకు, ఆ కృష్ణుడు లొంగక తప్పలేదు. దాంతో ఆయన విష్ణుచిత్తునికి కనిపించి, గోదాదేవిని శ్రీరంగానికి తీసుకురమ్మనీ… అక్కడ రంగనాథునిగా వెలసిన తాను గోదాదేవిని వివాహం చేసుకుంటాననీ చెప్పాడు. శ్రీరంగంలోని ఆలయ అర్చకులకు కూడా ఈ విషయాన్ని తెలియచేశాడు. కృష్ణుని ఆదేశాలను విన్న విష్ణుచిత్తుని సంతోషానికి అవధులు లేకుండా పోయాయి. వెంటనే గోదాదేవినీ, విల్లిపుత్తూరులోని ప్రజలనూ తీసుకుని శ్రీరంగానికి బయల్దేరాడు. అక్కడ వారి రాక గురించి ముందే తెలిసిన అర్చకులు వారిని ఆలయంలోకి తీసుకువెళ్లారు. పెళ్లికూతురిగా గర్భగుడిలోకి ప్రవేశించిన గోదాదేవి, అందరూ చూస్తుండగా ఆ రంగనాథునిలో ఐక్యమైపోయింది. ఇదంతా మకర సంక్రాంతికి ముందు భోగిరోజు జరిగింది. అందుకే ప్రతి వైష్ణవాలయంలో భోగినాడు గోదాదేవికి, విష్ణుమూర్తితో కళ్యాణం జరుపుతారు.
