What is Kriya yoga:

Kriya Yoga is a meditation technique that quickly accelerates one’s spiritual growth.

It was first made widely known by Paramhansa Yogananda in his Autobiography of a Yogi. According to Yogananda, Kriya is the most effective technique available to mankind today for reaching the goal of Yoga: union with the Divine.

Kriya is a technique of energy control, or pranayama. It is also a comprehensive spiritual path, which includes additional meditation practices, right living, and a link to the enlightened Masters mentioned in Autobiography of a Yogi.

Yogananda Maharshi Autobiography Book:

Yogananda writes in his autobiography that he took Kriya Yoga to the West after Mahavatar Babaji appeared to him as a person and ordered for it.

Kriya Yoga is the union (Yoga) with the Infinite through a certain act or rite (Kriya). According to Yogananda, Kriya Yoga was a simple, psychophysiological method by which human blood was decarbonated and reached with oxygen, which resulted into atoms with extra oxygen that were transmuted into life current to rejuvenate the brain and spinal centres.

The book tells that Kriya Yoga is referred to in the Bhagwat Gita and Patanjali, and had been there before the onset of the modern age. It was later recovered by his guru Lahiri Mahasya, who was trained by Mahavatar Babaji for it.

Yogananda says that a Yogi or a practitioner, who practices Kriya Yoga gradually gets freed from Karma, the cause-and-effect principle or as Yogananda says, the lawful chain of cause-effect equilibriums.

The book tells that Kriya Yoga is not just a meditational technique, but a key to a fulfilling spiritual life-controlling the mind through the life force is the most effective and scientific approach to the Infinite.

The Technique Of Kriya Yoga is:

Kriya Yoga is so effective because it works directly with the source of growth the spiritual energy deep in our spines. The Kriya technique is much more direct. It helps the practitioner to control the life force by mentally drawing it up and down the spine, with awareness and will. According to Yogananda, one Kriya, which takes about a half-minute, is equivalent to one year of natural spiritual growth.

The technique itself is taught through initiation. As Yogananda said in his autobiography, “Because of certain ancient yogic injunctions, I cannot give a full explanation of Kriya Yoga in the pages of a book intended for the general public. The actual technique must be learned from a Kriyaban or Kriya Yogi; here a broad reference must suffice.”

You can learn more about the technique by reading “The Science of Kriya Yoga” in Autobiography of a Yogi.

“Practice Kriya night and day. It is the greatest key to salvation. Other people go by books and lesser practices, but it will take them incarnations to reach God.” – Paramhansa Yogananda

The Kriya yoga system consists of a number of levels of pranayama, mantra, and mudra based on techniques intended to rapidly accelerate spiritual development and engender a profound state of tranquility and God-communion.

Yogananda attributes his description of Kriya Yoga to his lineage of gurus, Sri Yukteswar Giri, Lahiri Mahasaya, and Mahavatar Babaji. The latter is reported to have introduced the concept as essentially identical to the Raja Yoga of Patanjali and the concept of Yoga as described in the Bhagavad Gita.

Benefits of Kriya Yoga:

Kriya Yoga, as taught by Lahiri Mahasaya, is traditionally exclusively learned via the Guru-disciple relationship and the initiation consists of a secret ceremony. He recounted that after his initiation into Kriya Yoga, “Babaji instructed me in the ancient rigid rules which govern the transmission of the yogic art from Guru to disciple.”

As Yogananda describes Kriya Yoga, “The Kriya Yogi mentally directs his life energy to revolve, upward and downward, around the six spinal centers (medullary, cervical, dorsal, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal plexuses) which correspond to the twelve astral signs of the zodiac, the symbolic Cosmic Man. One half-minute of revolution of energy around the sensitive spinal cord of man effects subtle progress in his evolution; that half-minute of Kriya equals one year of natural spiritual unfoldment.”

The process of performing Kriya Yoga is claimed to lead to a certain purification of the blood which frees up the life force to withdraw into the spine. “Kriya Yoga is a simple, psycho-physiological method by which the human blood is decarbonized and recharged with oxygen. The atoms of this extra oxygen are transmuted into life current to rejuvenate the brain and spinal centers. By stopping the accumulation of venous blood, the yogi is able to lessen or prevent the decay of tissues; the advanced yogi transmutes his cells into pure energy. Elijah, Jesus, Kabir and other prophets were past masters in the use of Kriya or a similar technique, by which they caused their bodies to materialize and dematerialize at will.”

Swami Satyananda wrote “Kriya sadhana may be thought of as the sadhana of the ‘practice of being in Atman'”.

The Origin of Kriya Yoga:

Kriya Yoga is an ancient technique that was hidden in secrecy for many centuries. It was revived in 1861, when the great yogi Mahavatar Babaji taught the technique to his disciple Lahiri Mahasaya during their meeting in the Himalayas

“Kriya Yoga is an instrument through which human evolution can be quickened. The ancient yogis discovered that the secret of cosmic consciousness is intimately linked with breath mastery. This is India’s unique and deathless contribution to the world’s treasury of knowledge.” —Swami Sri Yukteswar, quoted in Autobiography of a Yogi

Paramhansa Yogananda taught Kriya Yoga as a spiritual path that includes three other techniques, along with discipleship to the Kriya line of Masters namely Christ, Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, Sri Yukteswar, and Paramhansa Yogananda.

“The Kriya technique will bring you to the source of inspiration and will give you answers, clear the brain and stimulate it, strengthen the medulla, and open the spiritual eye, as well as greatly magnetize the body.” – Paramhansa Yogananda
