Paush/Pushya Masam Festivals Dates in Telugu Calendar (December/January)

Paush/Pushya is the 10th lunar month in Hindu calendar. Pushya Masam 2022 – 2023 begins on Monday, 3 January and ended on Tuesday, 1 February.

Pausha is a unique month. It is considered both the most auspicious month and also inauspicious. Paush month occurs during December-January of the Gregorian Calendar. Many special festivals come in this month.

In Hindu Calendar, there are two methods to mark the lunar month. In one, lunar month is marked from Purnima to Purnima (known as Purnimanta calendar) and in other lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya (known as Amanta calendar).

Paush Meaning and Paush Month Importance:

Pushya means to nourish or nourishing  So this is a good month. It is just not a month for performing auspicious material functions like grahapravesam or marriages. The Paush month is dedicated to spiritual practices. If you perform any puja, meditation, or prayers on this month, they are very effective. This is because this period marks the early hours of the morning or predawn for the Devas. One earth year coincides with one day for them.

Significance of Pushya Masam or Paush Masa:

In Pushya Masam the framers would get the money for the crops that they have grown with a lot of care and effort. This month would bring money to the homes of many. So Pushya Masam is also known as Soubhagya Laksmi Masam.
A lot of spiritual significance is associated with the Pushya Masam. Though Pushya Masam is considered as Sunya Masam, means that Pushya Masam is not suitable for Marriages, Gruha Pravesh or House Warming etc as there will be no good Muhurats.
Pushya month is good for performing Pujas and other normal rituals. Pushya Masam is also good for pleasing the ancestors.
The Purnima or Pournami of Pushya Masam has a great importance for those who want to study Vedas. Pushya Pournima or Pushya Purnima is considered as the best day to start Veda Adhyayana or study of Vedas.
