The mighty Rudra is a strong and powerful god in the Rigveda. He is generally regarded as a personification of nature, but his weapons are maleficent, unlike that of Indra, which are directed only against the enemies of his worshipers. Rudra appears therefore to have originally represented not nature, but rather its baleful side in the destructive agency of lightning, thunder-storm, floods, etc.

With firm limbs, multiform, the strong, the tawny adorns himself with bright gold decorations. The strength of Godhead never departs from Rudra, him who is sovereign of this world, the mighty. – Rigveda 2.33.9

He is usually said to be armed with a bow and arrows. He is the father of Maruts. And He is said to have generated them from the shining udder of Prsni.

Offerings: Offer bell leaf, flowers, milk.

They gleam with armlets as the heavens are decked with stars, like cloud-born lightnings shine the torrents of their rain. Since the strong Rudra, O Maruts with brilliant chests, sprang into life for you in Pṛśni’s radiant lap. – Rigveda 2.34.2

Rudra, however, is never associated, as Indra is, with war like exploits of the Maruts, for he does not engage in conflict with the demons.

Tryambaka, a common epithet of Shiva in post-Vedic literature, is also applied to Rudra. The meaning appears to be ‘he who has three mothers’ in allusion to the threefold division of the universe.

Tryambaka we worship, sweet augmenter of prosperity. As from its stem the cucumber, so may I be released from death, not reft of immortality. – Rigveda 7.59.12

Rudra is fierce and destructive like a terrible beast. He is the ruddy boar of heaven. And He is exalted, strong, strongest of the strong, unassailable, unsurpassed in might, rapid and swift. He is young and never ages. He is called asura or the great asura of heaven. And He is self-glorious, rules over heroes, and is a lord (īśāna) of this vast world. He is the source (father) of everything.

Rudra by day, Rudra at night we honour with these our songs, the Universe’s Father. Him great and lofty, blissful, un-decaying let us call specially as the Sage impels us. – Rigveda 6.49.10

He is the one who ordains. By his rule and dominion, he is aware of the doings of men and gods. He makes the stream flow over the earth and moistens everything. He is easily invoked and is auspicious (śiva).

With humble adoration show this day your song of praise to mighty Rudra, ruler of the brave. With whom, the Eager Ones, going their ordered course, he comes from heaven, self-bright, auspicious (śiva), strong to guard. – Rigveda 10.92.9

Malevolence is frequently attributed to Rudra in the Rigveda; for the hymns addressed to him chiefly express fear of his terrible shafts and deprecation of his wrath. The gods representing the powers of nature, such as fire, sun, thunderstorm, etc., appear in the Vedas as almost exclusively beneficent beings, who bestow prosperity. The only deity in whom injurious features are at all prominent is Rudra. He is implored not to slay or injure, in his anger. His worshippers pray that they may be unharmed and obtain his favour.

O Rudra, harm not either great or small of us, harm not the growing boy, harm not the full-grown man. Slay not a sire among us, slay no mother here, and to our own dear bodies, Rudra, do not harm. – Rigveda 1.114.7

Harm us not, Rudra, in our seed and progeny, harm us not in the living, nor in cows or steeds. Slay not our heroes in the fury of thy wrath. Bringing oblations evermore we call to thee. – Rigveda 1.114.8

Rudra is, however, not purely maleficent like a demon. He is also begged in the Rigveda to avert anger or the evil that comes from the gods. He is besought not only to preserve from calamity but to bestow blessings, and produce welfare for man and beast.

May he grant health into our steeds, well-being to our rams and ewes, to men, to women, and to kine. – Rigveda 1.43.6

May all the Gods, may Agni the beneficent, God of all men, this day be with us for our weal. Help us the Ṛbhus, the Divine Ones, for our good. May Rudra bless and keep us from calamity. – Rigveda 5.51.13

Hither we call for aid the wise, the wanderer, impetuous Rudra, perfecter of sacrifice. May he repel from us the anger of the Gods: verily we desire his favourable grace. Rigveda 1.114.4

Rudra is also the god of medicine. His healing powers are mentioned with especial frequency. He commands every remedy and his hand is restorative and healing. He can resurrect people by his remedies, for he is the greatest physician of physicians; and by his auspicious remedies his worshippers live for hundred years. His beneficent and healing powers are like the nourishing and purifying action of nature.

With the most saving medicines which you give, Rudra, may I attain a hundred winters. Far from us banish enmity and hatred, and to all quarters maladies and trouble. – Rigveda 2.33.2

Praise him whose bow is strong and sure his arrow, him who is Lord of every medicine. Worship thou Rudra for his great good favour; adore the Asura with salutations. – Rigveda 5.42.11

Let us not anger thee, Rudra, with ill praise or mingled invocation. Do thou with strengthening medicines incite our heroes; I hear thee famed as best of all physicians. – Rigveda 2.33.4

The etymology of the word rudra is somewhat uncertain as regards the meaning. It is generally derived from the root rud, to cry, and interpreted as the Howler. However, it is also connected with a root rud having the conjectural meaning of ‘to shine’ or ‘to be ruddy’; hence, Rudra could also mean the ‘bright one’ or the ‘red one’.Hindus worship Rudra for health and prosperity.

To the strong Rudra we bring these, our songs of praise; to him, the Lord of Heroes with the braided hair, that it be well with all our cattle and our men, that in this village all be healthy and well-fed. – Rigveda 1.114.1

This comes very handy at the difficult times that we are currently going through. Learn this and do with your family twice a day. It takes about 6 minutes to do this.

What is Mrutha sanjeevani Kavacham or Mantra?

Shri Mritasanjeevani Stotra is dedicated to Lord Shiva . Shri Mritasanjeevani Stotra means the armour of raising from death. One can prevent untimely death by chanting this great Kavacham. It is some times referred as Mruta Sanjeevani stotram. You can also chant krimi samhara suktam for germ killing for this pandemic situation.

Who wrote Mrithasanjeevani Mantra? or By whom we got this Mantra?

According to Matsya Purana tell a story about the everlasting wars between devatas (Demi gods) and asuras. The devatas would always end up beating the asuras. Humiliated Shukra Acharya, ( the guru of the asuras) decided to approach Shiva to obtain the mritasanjeevani stotra, or mantra or Kavacham to make asuras invincible. He, meanwhile, asked the asuras to take refuge at the ashram of his father Bhrigu. The devatas found the absence of Shukra Acharya a most opportune time to attack the asuras once again. However, Bhrigu himself being away, the asuras sought his wife’s help. Using her powers, she rendered Indra immobile. Indra, in turn, appealed to Lord Vishnu to get rid of her. Vishnu obliged by severing her head with his sudarshana chakra. When Sage Bhrigu saw what had happened to his wife, he cursed that Vishnu be born on earth several times and suffer the pains of worldly life. Hence, Vishnu took birth on Earth in the form of Dashavatars.
